Philanthropy Responds to Tropical Storm Damage The Adirondacks, the Catskills, Hudson and Mohawk valleys are still dealing with the aftermath of two tropical storms and subsequent devastating floods. Many rural communities have been severely affected.
Information about what New York is doing can be found at the Governor’s office website.
Many funders are providing immediate emergency assistance and looking to the long term rebuilding needs of their communities. Grantmakers Forum of New York is currently working to list funders’ support efforts and we will continue to track relief and recovery in the wake of this natural disaster. Please continue to visit this page in the days ahead for more information. We encourage funders in our region to contact us directly about their current or potential plans for emergency assistance and support.
Funder Responses Many cultural organizations including libraries, museums, and historical societies sustained major damage. With support from the National Endowment for the Humanities Chairman’s Emergency Fund the New York Council for the Humanities is offering help. This special funding is being used by the Council to offer small, effective, and fast grants to New York State cultural groups whose buildings or collections were damaged or destroyed by floods. Grants of up to $1000 are available to defray salary and overtime costs for staff members working on storm-related clean-up. http://www.nyhumanities.org/grants/recovery.php Dyson Foundation responds to Hurricane Irene with emergency funding for Mid-Hudson Valley nonprofits The Keene Community Trust establishes Keene Flood Recovery Fund at the Adirondack Community Trust Triad Foundation has provided a grant to South Central NY American Red Cross for flood relief and is running a public service campaign in the Binghamton area through Park Outdoor Advertising to direct businesses and individuals to relief resources.
